Become a “Big”

Here are the quick and easy steps we’ll walk you through:

1. Inquire.

Contact our office at (802) 257-0361 or email bbbs@youthservicesinc.org to speak with our mentoring staff.

2. Apply.

Ready to take the next step right now? Complete this  preliminary application for adults. Return it by mail or email.

3. Interview.

A match specialist will set up an in-person interview with you.

4. Background Check.

Child safety is our priority, so we’ll review your records to ensure you’ll be a good fit for our program.

5. References.

You’ll need to provide at least three references of people we can talk with about your ability to be a mentor.

6. Training.

Prior to being matched, Bigs attend a group orientation and training session.

7. Matching.

Becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister is designed to build a match based on shared interests, personality and your volunteer preferences. Depending on your specific preferences, matching may go very quickly or take some time. Making the right match is important to our commitment to form lasting relationships.

8. Ongoing Support.

An integral part (and a requirement) of the BBBS program is our built in guidance and support provided by a trained match specialist. Regular check-ins will be scheduled throughout the duration of your match to ensure that you and your little maintain a safe, happy and healthy match experience.   We also provide periodic trainings to give our volunteers tools that will help them interact effectively with their “Little”. Voluntary activities and special events for matches are also built into the program, offering you the opportunity to have some fun and get to know other ‘Bigs’ and ‘Littles’ in the program.
