Youth Services’ Teen Drop-In Night

Who says there is no place for older teens to go on weeknights?

Youth Services offers a Teen Drop-In Night each Tuesday evening 6-9 p.m. in downtown Brattleboro for teens between 15 and 21 years old.

While in Brattleboro the agency uses the facilities of the Brattleboro Boys & Girls Club, the youth are not typical members of the Club and are not required to join in order to attend the Youth Services Drop-In Nights.

Drop-in Nights are a chance for youth to visit with peers, share a free meal and participate in life skills and livelihood development trainings which are incorporated into the mix of healthy substance-free activities already available at the club.

“This often hard-to-reach population has shown through their participation that they are hungry for more than the free meal,” explained Julie Davenson, Executive Director of Youth Services. “Local youth are eager for activities that are not only fun, safe, and substance free, but that will support them in realizing their full potential as individuals and community members,” she said.

Since the Brattleboro night was first launched in the fall of ‘08, participation has grown from 20 attendees to an average of 41 participants each week. Tuesday night discussion topics have included writing skills, the dangers of substance abuse and fad diets to STI contraction and responsible sexual behavior. Some weeks a movie is shown and discussed and periodically there are pool tournaments, games and seasonal parties.

Some federal dollars are being used for staffing, space rental, and a few of the hot meals cooked and served by youth who attend, while most other program costs are supported by local donations. There is no charge to attend.
