Circles of Support and Accountability (COSA) gather three to four volunteers around a person recently released from prison (the “core member”) to support them in the challenging transition back to the community after incarceration.
Volunteers meet with the core member in circle on a weekly basis over the course of one year to support the core member’s successful reintegration and to hold them accountable to the core member’s own vision of success, to conditions of release, to doing no more harm, to repairing harm where possible. This engagement consists mostly of structured conversation, though there’s plenty of room for creativity and fun. Some volunteers additionally spend time with the core member at other times during the week or help the core member with rides or life skills such as budgeting and resume writing.
The COSA program is credited with significantly reducing recidivism. It is also a source of joy and rich connection for those who participate in it and a deep dive into restorative practice for those interested in exploring restorative justice. The documentary Coming Home gives a good overview of the COSA program and stokes enthusiasm for getting involved.
